What web browser? USB portable alternative
A web browser is the program that loads pages, draws HTML, and keeps your tabs. People still confuse that job with “a big app you install next to Photoshop.” Capsule remains a browser in the strict sense: a native about-15 MB file that opens the web. It is not a desktop tool that happens to embed a web view. You copy it, you unplug it; the protocol stays HTTP, and the product stays a browser.
What this Web browser is — a protocol client, not Program Files theatre
HTTP, documents, tabs — the original job
A Web browser is the program that fetches URLs, renders pages and lets you hold several of them. Capsule does that. Mail in a tab, docs in a tab, a booking site in a tab. It is not a CDJ, not a VPN appliance and not an office suite with a hidden Chromium. Everyday language sometimes says “Internet browser” — the Internet-browser page covers that framing. This page is the technical pair: a Web browser as the HTTP client. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari are Web browsers too, and they are also large installed browsers. Capsule’s essential difference is shape: a native portable file rather than a setup wizard that claims the default handler for the whole OS.
An app versus a client
Electron apps, “site wrappers” and store packages blur the line. They look like windows and they are still applications with installers, updaters and a private URL. A Web browser remains a general client: you type any https:// you want. Capsule stays on that side of the line. You do not install Capsule into Program Files to add a feature; you launch a folder. History stays on this PC and tracker blocking can stay on. PIN plus Windows Hello can sit in front of the window. Vault is encrypted on this device, Capsule does not hold the master password and recovery runs through Google Authenticator rather than through a mailbox. That is workstation hygiene around a Web browser, not a new category of app. The private-browser page carries the vocabulary.
The installed Web browser still owns the machine
Most Web browser products expect an updater, a default-browser fight and a profile tied to that PC. That is fine at a desk you own, awkward on a lab image, a hotel business centre or a backstage Windows box. Capsule copies to USB or SSD with no admin, so schools and venues that block new software can still run a copied Web browser. Leave the host as you found it — no leftover Start menu tile is the point. Folder architecture lives on the portable-browser guide; the stick as physical media lives on the USB-browser guide. Same product, different questions.
When the Web browser also has to mix
A tab in Chrome is still a Web browser, and it is a poor live mixer because sandboxed Web Audio sits around 50 to 100 ms on the pro-audio page. Capsule Nightclub PRO adds ASIO under 5 ms without turning Capsule into a fake Serato. Komby DJ can run offline like historical DJ software, Icecast still needs a network and the PRO licence has a seven-day grace. You need that stack only if the same file has to survive a booth, which the DJ-browser guide covers.
Use this Web browser when you meant a client, not an installer
- Download Capsule, open ordinary HTTPS sites and keep Chrome or Safari at the desk if muscle memory demands it. The travel Web browser is the file.
- If you typed “Internet browser” as a consumer phrase, that page is next door; if you meant the stick, the USB-browser guide is the one you want. Same Capsule.
- Default-browser PC rules are Edge’s sport, which is covered on the Microsoft Edge alternative. Capsule does not need to win that war to be a Web browser.
- The Capsule home page summarises the product in one line.
FAQ
Is Capsule a Web browser?
Yes. Capsule is a native Web browser: HTTP, tabs, HTTPS, about 15 MB, USB, no admin. /download.
Is a Web browser the same as an internet browser?
Same product, different wording. Technical pair here; everyday pair on /news/internet-browser.
Does this Web browser need an installer?
No. Copy the folder. No wizard. Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Who makes this Web browser?
Komby Limited. Home: /.
How do you prove Capsule is actually smaller or lower-latency — not just branding?
Weigh the copied Capsule folder (about 15 MB stated; Demucs extra). Launch with no admin. For audio: Settings > Audio, buffer 128 at 48 kHz ≈ 2.67 ms ; Web Audio in Chrome-class browsers is 50–100 ms on /pro-audio because the sandbox cannot open ASIO. Komby Limited. No invented competitor installer sizes.
Do I still need Dashlane, 1Password or Bitwarden if I use Capsule?
Not for the local vault job. Komby Vault is built in: encrypted on this device, autofill, scam warning, import from Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, Chrome and Firefox. It is not Dashlane’s cloud sync. Keep a cloud manager only if you require their SaaS. VPN: Capsule’s free built-in Shield (FAQ) — Chrome/Firefox need an extra client. Nightclub audio is a separate PRO licence. Komby Limited. /download.
What makes Capsule a motion-design browser — is that just marketing?
Check the chrome. Changelog 3.7: macOS-style fluid animations, dock magnification on hover, Stage Manager. 3.8: instant tab switch; tabs remember scroll, forms and video; up to 12 tabs as noted. 3.12: no previous-page flash, snappier start, live address bar. Chrome/Firefox do not ship that dock. Safari’s motion is the Apple OS, not a ~15 MB USB browser. No invented animation numbers. Komby Limited. /download.
Is Capsule the first portable browser in the world?
No. Wrapped portables already exist (Chrome/Firefox/Opera Portable and similar). Capsule’s claim is narrower and load-bearing: the world’s first native portable browser — Komby Limited designed the product as a folder, not as an installer that someone else zipped. Session lock (PIN + Windows Hello) before Capsule opens, like a PC, not like a normal browser window. /download.
