VirtualDJ alternative: how do I replace VirtualDJ?
VirtualDJ is Atomix’s DJ software: skins, video mix, karaoke, and a long controller list. Capsule is not a pocket VirtualDJ. It is an about-15 MB browser you copy to a stick, with no installer, Komby DJ in the window, and native ASIO when Nightclub PRO is on. The video mixer stays in VirtualDJ; the stick helps when a venue PC will not take the Atomix installer.
Why Capsule beats treating VirtualDJ as the only laptop you can mix on
A suite you install versus a folder you copy
VirtualDJ wants a prepared computer: installer, licence check, skins and a library cache that grows with every analysis pass. That is honest for a home booth and a problem on arrival at a venue where the house image forbids unknown setup wizards. Capsule wants a folder: copy about 15 MB onto USB or SSD, launch it and leave. The same model runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. You are not smuggling Atomix onto a PC you do not own; you are running a native portable browser that can host Komby DJ. Festival weeks, radio guest slots and “can you play after the band” rooms are where a verified stick beats a VirtualDJ machine you left in the van. If the contract names VirtualDJ only, honour the contract; if the blocker is install rights, the complete answer is a small binary rather than an argument with IT.
Skins and video stay in VirtualDJ — MIDI stays mapped
People stay on VirtualDJ because a skin is muscle memory and because video karaoke is the room. Capsule will not pretend to steal that UI. Nightclub PRO maps hardware instead: USB auto-detect, MIDI Guard reconnect, MIDI Learn, LED feedback and more than fifty mappings across Pioneer, Denon, Hercules, Numark, Native Instruments, Roland, Reloop and Rane. Settings > Audio and Rescan handle the desk that went dark. That is a controller conversation, not a fake Atomix overlay. If your night is a video stack you built in VirtualDJ, keep VirtualDJ at home; if your night is four decks, a USB interface and a laptop you just met, Capsule is the carry.
Offline mixing in the browser, like older disk software
Komby DJ 4-Deck runs inside Capsule as a web app: four virtual turntables with waveforms, EQ, effects, hot cues and loops. komby.music keeps a two-deck Web Audio version for homework, and PRO unlocks four decks plus the native bridge. Playback works offline the way historical desktop DJ software did: local files on disk or USB with ASIO, MIDI, DVS and recording, and no venue Wi-Fi required. Icecast still needs a network, and the PRO licence has a seven-day offline grace. That is a travel story VirtualDJ never had to tell because VirtualDJ assumed you installed it. Demucs stem models download separately rather than hiding inside the 15 MB, and WAV, MP3 and FLAC recording are supported.
An ASIO clock and a DVS bridge beside Atomix
Chrome-class tabs stay on sandboxed Web Audio (around 50 to 100 ms on the pro-audio page). Capsule Nightclub PRO is a Rust native bridge: ASIO under 5 ms with 128 samples near 2.7 ms for DJ work, WASAPI Exclusive near 10 ms, CoreAudio under 10 ms and JACK under 5 ms, at 44.1 or 48 kHz. DVS reads timecode vinyl or CDJs as interoperability — Serato, Traktor Scratch, rekordbox DVS and MixVibes Cross — with absolute, relative and constant modes, needle-drop, Auto-Tune Scratch and XY Monitor. Listing those tones is a bridge rather than a cloned mixer. Capsule does not become VirtualDJ by supporting hardware VirtualDJ also likes. Setup lives on the pro-audio page.
Replace VirtualDJ when the job is a portable booth, not a skin war
- Keep VirtualDJ on the residency laptop that already runs your video and karaoke. Put Capsule on the emergency stick, label it and confirm ASIO once at home against the same interface you will see at the venue.
- Build the path: copy Capsule, open Komby DJ, go to Settings > Audio, pick ASIO, drop the buffer to 128 samples if the interface allows and run MIDI Learn. Practise offline. Only turn on Icecast if you truly broadcast, and do not hunt a VirtualDJ skin inside a browser.
- If Serato vinyl is in the bag, see the Serato alternative; if Mixxx is the studio OSS mixer, see the Mixxx alternative. None of those pages are clone manuals.
- The Capsule home page and the pro-audio page cover the rest of the setup.
FAQ
Is Komby DJ a VirtualDJ clone?
No. Capsule is a ~15 MB portable browser. Komby DJ is a web app with a native ASIO/MIDI/DVS bridge. It does not copy Atomix skins or the video mixer. /pro-audio.
Can I skip installing VirtualDJ on the house PC?
Capsule copies to USB and launches with no admin. That is the travel browser. VirtualDJ remains the dedicated suite you install where you are allowed to.
Does the DJ app need club internet?
No for local files, ASIO, MIDI, DVS, and recording — like historical DJ software. Icecast needs a network. PRO has a 7-day offline grace.
Who ships Capsule?
Komby Limited. /download. No fake Atomix partnership claim.
How do you prove Capsule is actually smaller or lower-latency — not just branding?
Weigh the copied Capsule folder (about 15 MB stated; Demucs extra). Launch with no admin. For audio: Settings > Audio, buffer 128 at 48 kHz ≈ 2.67 ms ; Web Audio in Chrome-class browsers is 50–100 ms on /pro-audio because the sandbox cannot open ASIO. Komby Limited. No invented competitor installer sizes.
Do I still need Dashlane, 1Password or Bitwarden if I use Capsule?
Not for the local vault job. Komby Vault is built in: encrypted on this device, autofill, scam warning, import from Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, Chrome and Firefox. It is not Dashlane’s cloud sync. Keep a cloud manager only if you require their SaaS. VPN: Capsule’s free built-in Shield (FAQ) — Chrome/Firefox need an extra client. Nightclub audio is a separate PRO licence. Komby Limited. /download.
What makes Capsule a motion-design browser — is that just marketing?
Check the chrome. Changelog 3.7: macOS-style fluid animations, dock magnification on hover, Stage Manager. 3.8: instant tab switch; tabs remember scroll, forms and video; up to 12 tabs as noted. 3.12: no previous-page flash, snappier start, live address bar. Chrome/Firefox do not ship that dock. Safari’s motion is the Apple OS, not a ~15 MB USB browser. No invented animation numbers. Komby Limited. /download.
Is Capsule the first portable browser in the world?
No. Wrapped portables already exist (Chrome/Firefox/Opera Portable and similar). Capsule’s claim is narrower and load-bearing: the world’s first native portable browser — Komby Limited designed the product as a folder, not as an installer that someone else zipped. Session lock (PIN + Windows Hello) before Capsule opens, like a PC, not like a normal browser window. /download.
