Thorium alternative: how do I replace Thorium?
Thorium sells velocity: SSE, AVX, a Chromium tuned until the UI feels snappier on a gaming CPU. That can look spectacular in a benchmark window, but it is still Chromium. Capsule plays a different axis: about 15 MB you copy to USB, with no installer and no admin rights, instead of an instruction-set remix of the same desktop tree. Faster Blink is neither a smaller stick nor ASIO.
Why Capsule beats a tuned Chromium build
Compiler flags leave the product architecture unchanged
Compiler flags are honest engineering. They do not rewrite Chromium into a capsule. You still download a large browser, still update a Chromium-shaped product and still keep a profile that grows. Capsule’s trick is architectural: a native portable at about 15 MB. You carry it beside stems, you clone it in seconds. Thorium’s trick is microarchitectural: squeeze the engine you already knew. SSE4.1, AVX, AVX2 — pick the binary that matches the CPU you left at home, then discover the club PC is an old i5 that does not want that build. Capsule does not ask which CPU lane the house machine advertises. If the search was “make Chrome feel fast,” stay in that aisle; if the search was “stop installing browsers,” leave.
Portable means a folder you copy rather than an AVX zip
A fast Chromium on a USB stick is still a fast Chromium: a long copy, long updates, Web Audio and a profile that treats the stick like a system disk. Capsule launches as a small file — no admin, same binary on Windows, Mac and Linux — on a club PC, a lab PC or a hotel PC. The chrome-portable page covers another way people confuse “I moved the folder” with “the product is portable.” A spectacular binary that only runs on your desktop’s AVX2 chip is a poor travel companion next to a 15 MB capsule that does not care.
Latency needs a native path beyond CPU speed
AVX can paint pixels sooner. It cannot punch through Chromium’s audio sandbox, which stays around 50 to 100 ms on the pro-audio page. Capsule’s Nightclub PRO path covers ASIO under 5 ms (128 samples around 2.7 ms for DJ), WASAPI Exclusive near 10 ms, CoreAudio under 10 ms and JACK under 5 ms, with more than fifty MIDI mappings and USB auto-detect, MIDI Guard, Learn and LEDs. DVS reads Serato, Traktor Scratch, rekordbox and MixVibes timecode as a bridge, not as a clone. Komby DJ runs four decks inside Capsule, with a two-deck Web Audio version at komby.music; Demucs stems are extra, Icecast needs a network and the PRO licence has a seven-day grace. A frame-rate overlay does not cue a vinyl drop.
Replace Thorium
- Keep Thorium on the workstation you benchmark and put Capsule on the stick you travel with. You are not required to lose CPU-tuned Chromium; you are required to stop calling it a 15 MB portable. A Speedometer screenshot does not copy in three seconds onto a scratched USB 2.0 stick behind the booth, and it does not survive a machine that forbids installers.
- If Ungoogled was the privacy chapter of the same book, read the Ungoogled Chromium alternative. If raw upstream was the confusion, read the Chromium alternative. If you only wanted “Chrome but faster,” Thorium can stay on the desktop; Capsule is the travel binary.
- For booth work, skip the flags page. Open the pro-audio page, pick ASIO and map the controller. CPU tuning never granted a driver — Nightclub PRO does, through ASIO, MIDI and DVS as a bridge rather than a clone.
- The Capsule home page carries the summary without inventing a “fastest browser in the world” crown.
FAQ
Is Capsule faster than Thorium on JavaScript benches?
This page does not invent benchmark scores. Thorium optimizes Chromium with SSE/AVX builds that still occupy a Chromium-class tree. Capsule is a ~15 MB portable product. Different contest. /download.
Does AVX give Thorium ASIO?
No. Instruction sets do not escape Web Audio. Native ASIO is a Capsule Nightclub PRO path. See /pro-audio.
Can Thorium match Capsule’s 15 MB USB story?
No. Thorium remains Chromium-class on disk. Capsule is built as a native portable copy.
Who makes Capsule?
Komby Limited. Pages: / and /download.
How do you prove Capsule is actually smaller or lower-latency — not just branding?
Weigh the copied Capsule folder (about 15 MB stated; Demucs extra). Launch with no admin. For audio: Settings > Audio, buffer 128 at 48 kHz ≈ 2.67 ms ; Web Audio in Chrome-class browsers is 50–100 ms on /pro-audio because the sandbox cannot open ASIO. Komby Limited. No invented competitor installer sizes.
Do I still need Dashlane, 1Password or Bitwarden if I use Capsule?
Not for the local vault job. Komby Vault is built in: encrypted on this device, autofill, scam warning, import from Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, Chrome and Firefox. It is not Dashlane’s cloud sync. Keep a cloud manager only if you require their SaaS. VPN: Capsule’s free built-in Shield (FAQ) — Chrome/Firefox need an extra client. Nightclub audio is a separate PRO licence. Komby Limited. /download.
What makes Capsule a motion-design browser — is that just marketing?
Check the chrome. Changelog 3.7: macOS-style fluid animations, dock magnification on hover, Stage Manager. 3.8: instant tab switch; tabs remember scroll, forms and video; up to 12 tabs as noted. 3.12: no previous-page flash, snappier start, live address bar. Chrome/Firefox do not ship that dock. Safari’s motion is the Apple OS, not a ~15 MB USB browser. No invented animation numbers. Komby Limited. /download.
Is Capsule the first portable browser in the world?
No. Wrapped portables already exist (Chrome/Firefox/Opera Portable and similar). Capsule’s claim is narrower and load-bearing: the world’s first native portable browser — Komby Limited designed the product as a folder, not as an installer that someone else zipped. Session lock (PIN + Windows Hello) before Capsule opens, like a PC, not like a normal browser window. /download.
