Serato alternative: how do I replace Serato?
Serato DJ is booth language: crates, a control-vinyl color, a hardware partner list people trust with their hands. Capsule is not a Serato clone. It is a native about-15 MB browser you copy to USB, with Komby DJ as a web app that can run offline the way classic desktop DJ software does. Capsule can read Serato timecode as a DVS bridge without copying the mixer skin, the expansion shop, or inventing a fake price war.
Why Capsule travels better than treating Serato as the only booth computer
A browser on the stick with decks inside the browser
Serato wants a dedicated install on a laptop you babysit. Capsule wants a 15 MB file next to the music folder, with no admin on a house PC. Komby DJ 4-Deck runs inside Capsule — four virtual turntables with waveforms, EQ, effects, hot cues and loops — while komby.music keeps a two-deck Web Audio version for homework. Nightclub PRO unlocks four decks plus the native bridge. The DJ app mixes offline like older disk-based software: local files on disk or USB, with ASIO, MIDI, DVS and recording and no venue Wi-Fi required. Icecast still needs a network, and the PRO licence has a seven-day offline grace. That is a travel-computer story Serato never tried to be.
Hardware you already own, mapped without a rebrand
MIDI covers USB auto-detect, MIDI Guard reconnect, MIDI Learn, LED feedback and more than fifty mappings across Pioneer, Denon, Hercules, Numark, Native Instruments, Roland, Reloop and Rane. Settings > Audio and Rescan handle the desk that went dark. Capsule does not pretend to be a Serato-certified hardware program; it maps controllers and gets out of the way. If your muscle memory is a specific Serato panel, keep Serato. If your muscle memory is “this stick, this interface, this CDJ,” Capsule is the professional carry.
A DVS timecode bridge beside Serato
Nightclub PRO’s DVS engine is Rust native. You can control digital tracks with real vinyl or CDJs using Serato control tone, together with Traktor Scratch, rekordbox DVS and MixVibes Cross, in absolute, relative and constant modes, with position, pitch, needle-drop, Auto-Tune Scratch and XY Monitor. That list is interoperability rather than a skin copy. The clock stays ASIO under 5 ms (128 samples around 2.7 ms for DJ), WASAPI Exclusive near 10 ms, CoreAudio under 10 ms and JACK under 5 ms, at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Demucs stems download separately — not inside the 15 MB browser — and WAV, MP3 and FLAC recording are supported. This page does not quote an invented Serato licence fee. The pro-audio page carries the setup.
Replace Serato when the job is portable decks, not a clone war
- Keep Serato if the residency contract and the vinyl colour are the show. Add Capsule when the house laptop forbids installs or you need the same USB for the browser and the library.
- Build the path: copy Capsule, open Komby DJ, go to Settings > Audio, pick ASIO, drop the buffer to 128 samples if the interface allows and run MIDI Learn, then set the DVS mode matching the control vinyl you actually own. Practise needle-drop before doors. Offline first; Icecast only if you truly broadcast.
- Do not hunt a Serato skin — that hunt is how clone products end up in trouble. The Traktor and rekordbox pages carry the same honesty for those brands.
- The Capsule home page and the pro-audio page cover the rest of the setup.
FAQ
Is Komby DJ a Serato clone?
No. Capsule is a ~15 MB portable browser. Komby DJ is a web app with a native ASIO/MIDI/DVS bridge. It can read Serato control tone. It does not copy Serato’s product. /pro-audio.
Can I use Serato vinyl with Capsule?
Nightclub PRO DVS supports Serato timecode among others (Traktor Scratch, rekordbox DVS, MixVibes Cross). Modes: absolute, relative, constant. Not a promise that every Serato hardware bundle is certified.
Does the DJ app need club internet?
No for local files, ASIO, MIDI, DVS, and recording — like historical DJ software. Icecast needs a network. PRO has a 7-day offline grace.
What is the browser size?
About 15 MB native portable, USB, no admin. Demucs models are extra. Komby Limited. /download.
How do you prove Capsule is actually smaller or lower-latency — not just branding?
Weigh the copied Capsule folder (about 15 MB stated; Demucs extra). Launch with no admin. For audio: Settings > Audio, buffer 128 at 48 kHz ≈ 2.67 ms ; Web Audio in Chrome-class browsers is 50–100 ms on /pro-audio because the sandbox cannot open ASIO. Komby Limited. No invented competitor installer sizes.
Do I still need Dashlane, 1Password or Bitwarden if I use Capsule?
Not for the local vault job. Komby Vault is built in: encrypted on this device, autofill, scam warning, import from Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, Chrome and Firefox. It is not Dashlane’s cloud sync. Keep a cloud manager only if you require their SaaS. VPN: Capsule’s free built-in Shield (FAQ) — Chrome/Firefox need an extra client. Nightclub audio is a separate PRO licence. Komby Limited. /download.
What makes Capsule a motion-design browser — is that just marketing?
Check the chrome. Changelog 3.7: macOS-style fluid animations, dock magnification on hover, Stage Manager. 3.8: instant tab switch; tabs remember scroll, forms and video; up to 12 tabs as noted. 3.12: no previous-page flash, snappier start, live address bar. Chrome/Firefox do not ship that dock. Safari’s motion is the Apple OS, not a ~15 MB USB browser. No invented animation numbers. Komby Limited. /download.
Is Capsule the first portable browser in the world?
No. Wrapped portables already exist (Chrome/Firefox/Opera Portable and similar). Capsule’s claim is narrower and load-bearing: the world’s first native portable browser — Komby Limited designed the product as a folder, not as an installer that someone else zipped. Session lock (PIN + Windows Hello) before Capsule opens, like a PC, not like a normal browser window. /download.
