Mixxx alternative: how do I replace Mixxx?
Mixxx is independent software in the best sense: a community mixer you can install, study, and argue about on a forum. It is a real instrument, and Capsule does not try to replace it feature for feature. It is an about-15 MB browser you copy to USB, with no admin rights, Komby DJ in the window, and native ASIO when Nightclub PRO is on. Your crates, sampler layout, and the Mixxx mapping you spent a winter on stay in Mixxx. The stick helps when the venue machine will not take the package.
Why Capsule travels better next to a Mixxx studio
A community install versus a verified folder
Mixxx expects write access: an installer, a distribution package, sometimes a build. That is fine on a laptop you administer and fragile on a locked club image, a school PC or a festival machine that only allows copied binaries. Capsule stays out of that negotiation. Copy about 15 MB, launch it and unplug — the same folder runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. You are not asking doors to bless Mixxx; you are bringing a native portable browser that can host decks. Keep Mixxx at the studio if that is the craft and the politics you prefer, and carry Capsule when the house PC is a stranger.
Mappings you earned versus a MIDI Learn you redo once
A Mixxx XML you tuned for years is not something Capsule pretends to ingest. Honest tools admit that. Nightclub PRO talks MIDI on its own terms: USB auto-detect, MIDI Guard, MIDI Learn, LED feedback and more than fifty mappings across Pioneer, Denon, Hercules, Numark, Native Instruments, Roland, Reloop and Rane. Settings > Audio then Rescan is the first move. Rebuild the gig map inside Komby DJ, or keep Mixxx at home for the map you refuse to lose. If the controller only feels right inside Mixxx, that is a reason to keep Mixxx — not a reason to skip a 15 MB emergency stick.
Offline mixing like the disk-era software it already is
Komby DJ 4-Deck inside Capsule offers four decks, waveforms, EQ, effects, hot cues and loops, with a two-deck Web Audio version at komby.music and the native bridge added by PRO. The whole thing mixes offline the way historical DJ software did: files on disk or USB, with ASIO, MIDI, DVS and recording, and no club portal to log into. Icecast still needs a network, and the PRO licence has a seven-day offline grace before it re-checks online. Demucs models are extra rather than hidden inside the 15 MB, and WAV, MP3 and FLAC recording are supported. Capsule does not become Mixxx by listing those verbs, and Mixxx does not become a 15 MB USB browser by remaining free. Two products, two jobs.
Mixxx already clocks tight — the gap is the host
Mixxx can speak low-latency audio on a machine you set up. The gap is not “Mixxx cannot do ASIO.” The gap is that a house PC often refuses to install Mixxx. Capsule’s PRO path covers ASIO under 5 ms with 128 samples around 2.7 ms, WASAPI Exclusive around 10 ms, CoreAudio under 10 ms and JACK under 5 ms, at 44.1 or 48 kHz. DVS reads Serato, Traktor Scratch, rekordbox and MixVibes timecode as a bridge, not as a clone. Chrome on the same room PC stays sandboxed near 50 to 100 ms. The brand-adjacent pages for VirtualDJ and Traktor cover the rest of the DJ cluster.
Replace Mixxx as travel software, not as a community exit
- Leave Mixxx on the studio machine and put Capsule on the stick. The ask is not that you abandon open source — it is that you have a folder when packages are forbidden.
- For the audio path, go to Settings > Audio, pick ASIO, drop the buffer to 128 samples if it stays stable and run MIDI Learn. Practise needle-drop offline and keep venue Wi-Fi off the critical path (except for Icecast).
- For VirtualDJ video nights, the VirtualDJ alternative is the comparison; for the Serato vinyl bag, read the Serato alternative. Keep Mixxx crates inside Mixxx — Capsule is a different instrument that happens to share a USB port.
- The Capsule home page and the pro-audio page cover the rest of the setup.
FAQ
Is Capsule a Mixxx clone?
No. Mixxx stays Mixxx. Capsule is a ~15 MB portable browser plus Komby DJ and a native ASIO/MIDI/DVS bridge. /pro-audio.
Will my Mixxx crates import one-click?
This page does not invent a magic crate importer. Play files from disk or USB. Keep Mixxx if the collection file is the show.
Does Komby DJ work without internet?
Yes for local files, ASIO, MIDI, DVS, recording. Icecast needs a network. PRO: 7-day offline grace.
Who publishes Capsule?
Komby Limited. /download. No claim that Capsule is Mixxx under another name.
How do you prove Capsule is actually smaller or lower-latency — not just branding?
Weigh the copied Capsule folder (about 15 MB stated; Demucs extra). Launch with no admin. For audio: Settings > Audio, buffer 128 at 48 kHz ≈ 2.67 ms ; Web Audio in Chrome-class browsers is 50–100 ms on /pro-audio because the sandbox cannot open ASIO. Komby Limited. No invented competitor installer sizes.
Do I still need Dashlane, 1Password or Bitwarden if I use Capsule?
Not for the local vault job. Komby Vault is built in: encrypted on this device, autofill, scam warning, import from Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, Chrome and Firefox. It is not Dashlane’s cloud sync. Keep a cloud manager only if you require their SaaS. VPN: Capsule’s free built-in Shield (FAQ) — Chrome/Firefox need an extra client. Nightclub audio is a separate PRO licence. Komby Limited. /download.
What makes Capsule a motion-design browser — is that just marketing?
Check the chrome. Changelog 3.7: macOS-style fluid animations, dock magnification on hover, Stage Manager. 3.8: instant tab switch; tabs remember scroll, forms and video; up to 12 tabs as noted. 3.12: no previous-page flash, snappier start, live address bar. Chrome/Firefox do not ship that dock. Safari’s motion is the Apple OS, not a ~15 MB USB browser. No invented animation numbers. Komby Limited. /download.
Is Capsule the first portable browser in the world?
No. Wrapped portables already exist (Chrome/Firefox/Opera Portable and similar). Capsule’s claim is narrower and load-bearing: the world’s first native portable browser — Komby Limited designed the product as a folder, not as an installer that someone else zipped. Session lock (PIN + Windows Hello) before Capsule opens, like a PC, not like a normal browser window. /download.
